Count the less visible costs
The cost of a hiring mismatch extends beyond the recruitment invoice. Manager time, repeated onboarding, delayed work, and the pressure placed on colleagues all matter. Looking at these effects helps a business understand why a thoughtful selection process is worth the effort.
Diagnose the mismatch honestly
Sometimes the problem is capability. Sometimes the role was poorly defined, the expectations changed, or the employee never received the support they needed. Separate these issues before concluding that better sourcing alone would have changed the outcome.
Improve the decision process
Agree on the essential outcomes of the role and assess candidates against those outcomes. Use relevant work discussions, structured interviews, and appropriately conducted references. Give candidates an accurate picture of the work so that they can make an informed decision as well.
Protect the first months
A good hiring decision still needs a clear start. Assign an onboarding owner, set expectations, and schedule early check-ins. Address misunderstandings while they are small. Review what the business can learn from each hire, and feed those lessons back into the next search.
Put the thinking into practice.
