Before the first day

Confirm the practical details, prepare access and equipment, and let the team know who is joining. Share a realistic schedule for the first week and name a person who can answer questions. Small signs of preparation tell a new colleague that their arrival matters.

Days 1–30: establish clarity

Explain the business, the role, and the people the employee will work with. Set a manageable first assignment and agree on what a successful first month looks like. Check that the new colleague understands the work and knows how to ask for help.

Days 31–60: build contribution

Move from orientation to meaningful ownership. Review early work together, discuss what remains unclear, and introduce responsibilities at a sensible pace. Ask for feedback on the onboarding experience rather than assuming that silence means everything is working.

Days 61–90: agree on the next chapter

Review progress against the expectations set at the start. Discuss strengths, development needs, and the next set of priorities. This framework is a practical planning guide; adapt review milestones to the role and to the applicable employment arrangements.

Put the thinking into practice.
